The colorful roses and meanings

The rose is a flower that has sparked the imagination and touched the hearts of so many people; there is no other flower that has been the highlight of a person’s day; the gift of love and happiness, bringing two people together, or the gift symbolizing the grief felt at the passing of somebody loved. The rose, this beautiful delicate flower is a flower more famous then any other in the whole world.

Red Roes: Love, Romance
Long associated with beauty and perfection, red roses are a time-honored way to say “I love you.” Whether it’s for a birthday, Valentine’s Day or just to express appreciation on any old day, there’s no better way than a bouquet of red roses to express your feelings.

Red roses are given to those who you want to show love and passion, people who you have great respect for, and those who have shown great courage.

The quantity can also have a special meaning. A single red rose shows love, a dozen shows gratitude, twenty-five shows congratulations and fifty show unconditional love. Two red roses tied together symbolize an engagement.

Pink Rose: Love, Attitude and Appreciation
A classic symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as a token of admiration and appreciation. Whether they’re for your best friend, fiancĂ©e or ever-dependable cubicle mate, a pink rose bouquet will create a bright spot in a special someone’s day.
Deep pink is used for appreciation and gratitude, whereas light pink conveys admiration and sympathy, and peach roses are given to show modesty.

White Rose: Marriage, Purity
White roses are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings, but their quiet beauty has also made them a gesture of remembrance. When the occasion calls for reverence, whether stately or somber, a bouquet of white rose is a perfect way to say, “I’m thinking of you.”
A white rose that has been dried means "Death is Preferable to Loss of Virtue". A whithered white rose represents fleeting beauty, or given to show that no impression was made.

Orange Rose: Desire, passion
Colors range from bright orange to coral. Verities include Tropical Amazon, Marlyse, and Sari.
Orange roses are given to those who you desire, those you want to get to know better, or those who you are proud of.

Yellow Rose: Friendship, joy
When it comes to sending a joyful message, yellow roses are your best friend. In fact, yellowroses are a traditional symbol of friendship, so there you go. With their warm, sunny disposition, a bouquet of yellow roses tends to light up the room, making them a perfect way to say thanks, get well, congratulations or just, “Hey, thanks for being you.” Sending flowers to your loved ones using online methods .

Yellow and White Quilled Jhumkas

Here is a tutorial on making a pair of quilledjhumkas with studs using paper quilling strips.

Tools Needed:

  • paper quilling strips
  • flat back pearls.
  • Wire Cutter
  • Round Nose Pliers
  • Flat Nose Pliers

Making process of Quilled Jhumkas:
Step 1:
Insert a paper strip in a slotted quilling needle.
Keep quilling till you make a tight coil of the desired size. Quilling strips of two colors were glued together before quilling the coil. Glue the end so that the coil is secure.

Step 2:
Slide and remove the coil from the slotted tool.

Step 3:
Using your finger gently push from the center of one side of the coil to form a cup like structure. Apply a coat of fabric glue on the inside of the cup and the outside. Allow it to dry. The structure will be secure now.

Step 4:
Insert an eye pin from the bottom of the cup. Insert a small metal bead spacer on the top. Make a small loop at the top of the jhumka as shown. Round nose pliers have been used to make this loop.

Step 5:
Insert a jump ring into the loop. You can use flat nose pliers to open and close the jump ring. Now for the top part or the stud, make a smaller tightly quilled paper coil.

Step 6:
Glue on a flat back pearl at the center of this coil. This step is optional. Now apply glue on a earring post.Attach the small coil made in step 12 to the earring post. It has to hold on well… allow it to dry completely.

Step 7:

Slide the jump ring attached to the jhumka in the wire of the earring post and insert the ear backs.Repeat the steps above for the other earring.  And we have the completed pair of quilled jhumkas…

The Story Of Kanchepuram Silk Sarees

That’s the story of origin of Kanchipuram Silk Sarees. Those Kanchi Silk Weavers are considered to be the ones behind the existence of this kind of Sarees. Kanchipuram Silk Sarees are no normal sarees. They are hand-woven in the town named Kanchipuram in India. The land of Kanchipuram is known as the temple city or the city of thousand temples.

Once upon a time there was a master weaver named Sage Markanda who used to weave for Gods. He even wove a tissue from the petals of the lotus flower. He knew the most favorite fabric of all Gods – he knew Lord Shiva liked cotton and Lord Vishnu liked silk. His expertise was passed on to his descendents which are now considered as Kanchi Silk Weavers.

In south India, these sarees are considered very special. Being an integral part of South Indian weddings, Kanchipuram Sarees hold a luxurious status. The sarees are considered special for their superior and rare color combinations. These sarees cost anywhere between Rs. 2500 – Rs. 1,00,000 depending upon the kind of work that goes into the saree.

These sarees are hand woven from pure mulberry silk thread. The native industries of Kanchipuram are only into manufacturing the sarees not the raw material. The main raw materials that go into Kanchipuram Sarees are – mulberry silk threads, metallic threads (Zari) and dyes.

Nowadays, people have been showing lots of creativity when it comes to the Kanchipuram Sarees. Motifs like chariots, peacocks, lions, coins, parrots, mangoes etc can been seen on such sarees.
Though the Kanchipuram Saree industry in Kanchipuram is facing a big crunch due to increase in raw material and production cost, ladies have been loving Kanchipuram Silk Sarees more and more. In fact, one Kanchipuram Saree is considered a must in an Indian Woman’s wardrobe.

How to prepare Basundi

Basundi is thick sweetened milk that is flavored with cardamom or saffron and garnished with nuts like pistachios or chironji. Rabri is similar to basundi but differs in texture due to the difference in the method of preparation. Basundi recipe is almost the same as rabdi aka rabri, the recipe of which I had posted earlier.
It has more liquid content compared to rabdi and less milk solids. Basundi is eaten on it own, either warm or chillied and is also be served with puri or jalebi. While making rabri recipe, whole milk is reduced to less than half of its original quantity. It is thick with milk solids and has minimal liquid content compared to basundi.
Recipe:

Ingredients:
Full fat milk - 2 lts
Cardamom powder - 1/2 tsp
Pistachios - fistful
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Saffron - 7-8 strands
Chironji - 1/2 tbsp
Almonds - 7-8, blanched and peeled

Preparation:
  • Sliver the blanched almonds, chop the pistachios and set aside.
  • Boil milk in a large heavy bottomed wide vessel on high flame. Once it comes to a boil, reduce flame to low and allow to simmer for 12-15 mts, stirring in intervals of 3 mts.
  • Add sugar at this point and keep stirring constantly. You will see that the milk thickens. This could take 45 to 50 mts.
  • Add cardamom powder and mix well. Turn off flame and allow to cool down slightly. Remove to a serving bowl.
  • Garnish with the chopped nuts and saffron strands.
  • Ladle into serving bowls and serve warm. You can even chill the rabdi and serve it chilled.

For Tips:
  • Use a heavy bottomed vessel while making basundi.
  • Full fat milk is best for a rich, creamy flavor. You can use 2% milk but it will be less creamy.
  • You refrigerate for 4-7 days or freeze it for a few weeks.
  • If you are serving chilled basundi, reduce the boiling time of milk by 10-12 mts as basundi will thicken on cooling.

Making procedure for Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients:
  • Vegetable oil for the pans
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring (1 ounce)
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • Crushed pecans, for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar

Cream Cheese Frosting, recipe follows

Cream Cheese frosting:
  • 1 pound cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (1 cup), softened
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

Procedure:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil and flour 3 (9 by 1 1/2-inch round) cake pans.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. In another large bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.

Using a standing mixer, mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined and a smooth batter is formed.

Divide the cake batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Place the pans in the oven evenly spaced apart. Bake, rotating the pans halfway through the cooking, until the cake pulls away from the side of the pans, and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean, about 30 minutes.

Remove the cakes from the oven and run a knife around the edges to loosen them from the sides of the pans. One at a time, invert the cakes onto a plate and then re-invert them onto a cooling rack, rounded-sides up. Let cool completely.

Frost the cake. Place 1 layer, rounded-side down, in the middle of a rotating cake stand. Using a palette knife or offset spatula spread some of the cream cheese frosting over the top of the cake. (Spread enough frosting to make a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer.) Carefully set another layer on top, rounded-side down, and repeat. Top with the remaining layer and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Sprinkle the top with the pecans.

In a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or with a hand-held electric mixer in a large bowl, mix the cream cheese, sugar, and butter on low speed until incorporated. Increase the speed to high, and mix until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. (Occasionally turn the mixer off, and scrape the down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula.)

Reduce the speed of the mixer to low. Add the vanilla, raise the speed to high and mix briefly until fluffy (scrape down the bowl occasionally). Store in the refrigerator until somewhat stiff, before using. May be stored in the refrigerator for 3 days.

Now the delicious Red velvet cake is Ready. Serve this cake to your loved ones. For more types of delicious cakes click here.

Tips for paper quilling

A completed quilled project may look complicated, but the basics of this paper craft are actually not hard to master. If you have ever wanted to give paper quilling a try, here are seven tips for getting started! This is achieved by rolling strips of paper and pinching or curving them into various forms.

To select Quilling paper:
You can buy packs of pre-cut quilling paper in most major art and crafts stores, but you can also cut your own strips of papers. Paper quilling starts with rolling paper strips, and so naturally, the No. 1 item on the supplies list is quilling paper. The length and size of the paper will determine how the paper quilled project eventually looks.

Basic Designs of Quilling:
The most basic shape of paper quilling is the rolled paper coil. By pinching and adjusting the tightness of the paper coil, different quilled shapes are made. Some of the most basic paper quilling shapes are shown in the picture.

Tool selection:
In order to paper quill, a needle-like tool is required. A slotted tool is usually recommended to the paper quilling beginner because it is easier to roll paper with it.
Glue is another essential item on the supplies list. It is also helpful to have a pair of tweezers to handle the quilled pieces and a circle template to measure the coils with.

For Example:
You don’t need a lot of shapes to make something fun with paper quilling. Even the simplest of the quilled shapes can be used for a project. For example, in the card pictured above, five simple loose coils were used for the monkey’s juggling balls to make a fun greeting card.

The creative application:
Paper quilling is frequently used for making greeting cards or in wall art, like decorative canvases or framed art. Some folks even make wearable art-like earrings out of their paper quilled shapes!

For example, in the picture above, I combined paper quilling with a vellum cutout of a jar that I had cut with my electronic die cutting machine.

What is meant by Raksha Bhandan

Raksha Bhandan is celebrated when goddess lakshmi tied a rakhi onto the wrist of king bali and making her brother. It is undoubtedly one of the most important cultural festivals in India. Rakhi is a festival, relationship between brother and sister. The meaning of raksha bandhan is the ‘knot of protection’.

Raksha means protection and bandhan means knot so Raksha bandhan means knot of protection. This festival has a long standing Indian heritage. The reason behind the celebration of this day is that brother should take the responsibility to protect his sister.

Raksha bandhan is also known as rakhi purnima. Rakhi purnima is also known as kajri navami or kajri purnima in northern India. It is also called cocounut full moon or nariyal purnima in the western state. Rakhsha bandhan is also known by the punya pradayak and vish tarak.

After the use of rakhi it is thrown out therefore in a way it is ludicrous of the holy symbol. Many stories have been passed that specify the origin of Raksha bandhan. One of them is the wife of the pandava brothers, draupadi tearing a piece of her sari to cover the wound and the tying it around the hand of lord Krishna. Because when the fighting with shishupala lord Krishna hurt his hand. And in the return for her kindness, Lord Krishna asked what she would like. And then draupadi replied to lord that she only most wanted his marvelous presence at every moment of life. And for that moment, Lord Krishna told draupadi that whenever she called out for him he would be with her. After some time, kauravas tried to strip off her in their court, and that time she called to lord Krishna to save her. And in the arrival, lord Krishna gave her a sari that was substantially long and kauravas was unable to undress her and draupadi was saved from being dishonored.

Rakhi like rituals, there is no doubt. The festival of raksha bandhan symbolizes all kinds of protection and good from immorality forces. In the great epic Mahabharata, describe that the lord Krishna advising yudhishtthir to tie the rakhi to guard himself against awaiting evils.
